The biological meaning of adult refers to an animal that is capable of reproduction. In the context of humans an adult's term has implications that are based on social and legal concepts. Contrary to the concept of a non-adult or "minor", a legal adult has attained the age of majority, and therefore is regarded as an independent, self-sufficient person and responsible. The term "major" can be used to define the person. The age for achieving legally adulthood is 18 although definition may vary by laws, countries, and psychological development.

The period of human development during which mental and physical maturity has been reached. Adulthood is commonly considered to begin at age 20 or 21 years. The middle age begins at around 40 years before being followed by an old age of about 60. The beginning of adulthood occurs between the ages of 18 and 30. The middle age stage begins from the mid-30s through to 60s. Late adulthood starts at the middle of 60s. When we reach the early stages of adulthood (between 20 and 40) then our bodies are at their peak of maturity although our weight and height might increase a bit. Our physical capabilities are peaking in young adulthood. This is reflected in muscle strength in addition to reflex time, the senses, and heart functioning.
